A spring, a river and a forest

COMO Shambhala Estate sits on 22 acres of riverine forest above the Ayung River, a short drive north of Ubud. The land carries a spring the property calls The Source, and the Balinese have treated this stretch of valley as a place of purification for far longer than there has been a hotel on it. The buildings are open timber pavilions and residences set into the slope, so the forest is the wall of most rooms rather than the view from one. Hydrotherapy and vitality pools are fed from the spring rather than from a municipal main. That is a real answer to the question of where the water comes from, and it is the kind of answer most properties cannot give.

The kitchen with a denominator

Almost every hotel says it sources locally. This one publishes the fraction. All fresh fruit and vegetables come from Santika Farm at Bedugul, in the cool highlands, and more than 94 per cent of daily supply comes from within Bali. A share with a named grower behind it is close to the strongest food evidence a property can publish, and it is rare. It stops short of measured for one reason: the figure is the Estate's own and nobody outside has checked it. The growing method is missing too, since the farm is named and its practice is not. Waste runs the same way, with 14.35 tonnes of food waste diverted in 2024 through a named partner, Magi Farm.

What the record does not yet reach

The Estate's published sustainability reporting is unusually numerate about waste, compost and native planting, and almost silent about the inside of a room. There is no ventilation or filtration specification, no lighting figure, no bedding or mattress detail, no acoustic figure, and nothing at all on the electromagnetic environment. The water is named at source and never analysed in public. This is a property that already does most of the work and has never had it measured, which is a much shorter distance to travel than it sounds.

What is not publishedthe gaps we looked for and did not find

The Estate publishes an unusually numerate sustainability report and almost none of it describes the air, light or electromagnetic environment of a guest room. Nothing is published on ventilation, filtration or any air reading, so Air Ecology is empty. Nothing is published on colour temperature, blackout provision or lighting product, so Light Rhythm is empty. Nothing is published on network topology, access point placement or field levels, so EMF Harmony is empty. Nothing is published on background noise levels, separation between pavilions or mechanical plant noise, so Sound and Sensory Ecology is empty. Nothing is published on bedding fibre, mattress construction, paint or finish emissions, or the composition of the bath products, so Materials and Textiles is empty. The Source is named as a spring and the hydrotherapy pools are described, but no contaminant panel, laboratory, treatment train or filter grade is published for the water a guest drinks or bathes in. The property states it holds EarthCheck Silver certification. That claim is recorded here but not admitted as a held standard, because it could not be confirmed in EarthCheck's own member directory.

Not published is not unsafehow to read these scores, and what this index does not promise

A low score means a property has not published information. It does not mean the property is unsafe, unhealthy or poorly run.

These scores measure disclosure. These scores describe disclosure, not property quality. This index has no commercial relationship with the properties listed unless a badge on the listing says otherwise.

Conditions change, and we will not always know. Every record is a snapshot of what a property had published when we read it, and that date is on the page. Conditions change: a property can refit, change suppliers or replace a system at any time, and nothing requires it to tell us. We re-read records and ask properties directly for updates, but there will always be a gap between what is true today and what was published when we looked. Use this as a frame of reference for what to ask, not as a substitute for asking. Take your own questions to the property before you book, and tell us if you find something we have wrong.

We report what properties publish. We do not inspect, certify or vouch for any property on this index unless a listing says we assessed it on site, and we accept no responsibility for decisions made or outcomes experienced on the basis of what you read here.

Questions travelers askwater, air, EMF, and whether it is worth it

Questions travelers ask about COMO Shambhala Estate

Does COMO Shambhala Estate publish water quality testing?

Yes, at specification level: a named system, supplier or standard is on the record, without a published measurement. Scored 2 of 3.

What is the air quality like in the rooms?

We can only report what is published about the rooms themselves. No. Nothing is published, and we looked. That is a statement about the public record, not about safety.

Is COMO Shambhala Estate low-EMF?

No measurement is published. Only 15 of the 92 properties we have researched publish any bedroom EMF information at all, so this is the industry norm, not an outlier.

Is COMO Shambhala Estate worth it?

We score evidence, not experience. On evidence, it ranks 71 of 92 researched records. The strongest documented pathways are Water Integrity and Food and Kitchen; nothing is published on Air Quality or Light Rhythm.
