A 1920s Renaissance Revival tower on the Broadway Corridor, built by Curlett and Beelman as a private club and reworked by Kelly Wearstler into 147 rooms, no two alike. The documented story here is ceramic. Wearstler has put the count on the record: 136 unique types of tile, vintage to custom, with a mural by Los Angeles ceramicist Ben Medansky, a graphite reception desk by Morgan Peck, a hand painted ceiling by Abel Macias and stained glass by Judson Studios. A counted tile programme and four named makers are real materials evidence, which is more than most design hotels put on the record.

The club bones
The adaptive reuse is the building's second act. The original pink and white checkerboard floor stays. The two largest suites are built from the club's basketball court and indoor pool, and the 24 hour gym sits where the 1930s athletic club trained. Keeping a 1926 shell in service is also the quietest materials decision a hotel can make: the fabric that would off-gas is a century past doing so.
Where the record stops
The kitchen has found its voice since the first look at this record: seasonal California ingredients, sustainably caught seafood, and cooking without seed oils or artificial dyes, published for all three restaurants and run with the Lucques Group of Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne. It still names no farm. Nothing at all is published on air, water, light, electromagnetic load or sound, and the hotel markets complimentary Wi-Fi throughout. The building's design is still the bulk of its public case. One specified system in any other column would give this record a second leg to stand on.

Not published is not unsafehow to read these scores, and what this index does not promise
A low score means a property has not published information. It does not mean the property is unsafe, unhealthy or poorly run.
These scores measure disclosure. These scores describe disclosure, not property quality. This index has no commercial relationship with the properties listed unless a badge on the listing says otherwise.
Conditions change, and we will not always know. Every record is a snapshot of what a property had published when we read it, and that date is on the page. Conditions change: a property can refit, change suppliers or replace a system at any time, and nothing requires it to tell us. We re-read records and ask properties directly for updates, but there will always be a gap between what is true today and what was published when we looked. Use this as a frame of reference for what to ask, not as a substitute for asking. Take your own questions to the property before you book, and tell us if you find something we have wrong.
We report what properties publish. We do not inspect, certify or vouch for any property on this index unless a listing says we assessed it on site, and we accept no responsibility for decisions made or outcomes experienced on the basis of what you read here.
